In this world of money, finances and materialism sometimes the smallest token of appreciation is the best git someone can give.

My friend Katie Spotz has a huge heart. She works for a charity that raises money for clean drinking water in Africa. Katie recently returned from her trip. She's an amazing person who has done amazing things. She has a crazy busy schedule. She's so special I dedicated a chapter of my book to her.

Even though she is busy, she took the time to give the greatest gift someone can give. Simply saying "thank you." She sent me the picture above to thank me for the support I give her.

I need to thank her for the inspiration she gave me with the picture. The next time you want to give a gift to someone, just remember, you don't have to spend a lot of money to make the gift special!

The meaning of Christmas

This Christmas was special. Not because of gifts, but because of a special event.

Many people believe the meaning of Christmas is to give and receive gifts. This belief can cause a lot of stress. It causes people to be moody during a time of the year when we're supposed to give good tidings to all. We're supposed to promote peace and most importantly we should be enjoying our time with friends and loved ones.

This year, I got to spend time with my sister. She's been out of the country serving in the military. The last time I saw here was about 8 months ago. She recently sent me an e-mail saying she would be returning to the United States early and would be home for the holidays. Her wish was to see her family.

Her her way home, she arranged to have a layover at the Phoenix Airport. She would be here for about an hour. I know, it's not much time, but a little bit of time is better than nothing. We were worried that we would have even less time to see each other because of the security at airports theses days.

I explained my worries to my wife and she came up with a great idea. She told me to talk to the airport and airlines. So, I did. I explained the situation and they told us we could get a special military family pass to go beyond the security check point. To my sister's surprise, Kelly and I were there waiting for her at the gate when she got off of her plane.

We walked her to her next gate and talked for over an hour. We caught up, shared stories, and saw pictures of her adventures overseas. The time flew by, but it was the best gift ever. Time spent with people I loved. My sister and my wife.

People are getting to bent out of shape about people saying "Merry Christmas" or "Happy Holidays." It's not what people say, it's the meaning and spirit behind it. The spirit of enjoying time with your family and friends. Showing them how much you love them and putting a smile on their faces.

The words "Thank You" can mean a lot especially when given at the right time.

Many people focus so much on material gifts, they forget that something "simple" can make more of an impact.

I have a friend named Katie. I've written about her several times on this blog. She is special, modest and very genuine.

She participates in several endeavours to help people . One of them is to provide clean drinking water to children in Africa. I do what I can to support Katie and her endeavours. Many times I feel and wish I could do more.

That all changed when I received an e-mail today from Katie. The picture is above.

Katie is someone I look up too because of the amazing things she does and her amazing heart and passion. With every thing going on, she still managed to do something special.....she said "Thank you!"

Never forget to thank the people who support you. It's one of the greatest gifts you can give!

Trip to New Mexco

Visiting family and friends is very important to my wife and I. She is a proud native of New Mexico. I have a lot to learn about the state.

In June we took a trip to New Mexico so Kelly and her family could show off some of their favorite spots. One of my wife’s favorite places is the town of Taos.

We had a great time. That northern part of the state is absolutely beautiful!

I’ve been traveling a lot lately. And when I’m traveling there are tow things I do to pass the time. Sleep and read! Airports and airplanes give me an opportunity to catch up on both.

Help a Great Charity!

A little over a year ago, I was introduced to a non-profit organization called The Compass Retreat Center. The organization provides services and activities for the service people and the people who love them. Many of the service men and women they help are reservist who don't receive the same support as active duty military service men and women.

Many of the soldiers are everyday people who were sent on deployment for LONG periods of time and when the return they need support to put their lives back together.

Compass offers retreats for to assist with family bonding with spouses and children. Opportunities to reconnect with their community, counseling and job support services.

The organization is a finalist to receive a $100,000 grant from IKEA. The finalist who receives the most votes will win the grant.

I've had the great opportunity to speak at two of Compass's Family Retreats and lead a planning retreat for their Board of Directors.

I'm asking you to help them by voting daily until December 23rd. This is a great way to not only support a military service person, but more importantly, you're helping support their families.

Things that don't make sense

There are sometimes things happen and you just say…”That doesn’t make any sense!”

While typing my blogs on a flight from Chicago to Phoenix, I was reminded of something that bothers me and make’s no sense. I was using Microsoft Word to type in a web address. Immediately it turned the text into a hyperlink file. That just means the text was underlined and turned into a link I can click on to take me to a website.

Microsoft is the only software that does this. My word processor for Apple does this too. My question to the designers is. If I’m typing a letter or making a poster, why would you turn the words in to a link. There is a very HIGH chance I’m going to print this file. There is no way for someone to click on a piece of paper to direct them to the website I’m typing. When I go to change this, a webpage pops up because I clicked it so I could highlight the words to remove the hyperlink. It becomes very annoying. Plus I’m very anal at times.

So, that’s my vent for today. I hope you laughed! I kind of did.

San Diego

San Diego is an amazing place. To start the summer off, Kelly and I were invited to San Diego to house sit for our friends. We got free lodging for watching their dog and house. That was a great deal! A Win-win situation for everyone!

Kelly and I had a long spring. Busy working and had a lot of stress from “life.” This was our first opportunity we had to get away together in over a year. The trip was needed.

Our plans, relax, do some future planning, relax, walk on the beach, relax, and explore San Diego.

We did all of the above. The best part of the trip spending time together and having our little friend Bella (canine) join us.

Some of our adventures included visiting both San Diego Zoos (yes they have two!). Going to the Midway Aircraft carrier museum, and watching nightly sunsets at the beach.

I broke my ring!

My and my friends showing off our wedding rings. We all got married in the last year.

Matching Wedding bands my wife had made for us

One of the biggest fears for every married man is loosing his wedding ring. My fear level is higher than most men because my wife had my ring made just for me. I like to tell people she designed it for me. It’s white gold with turquoise inlayed in the band. Very pretty (yes I said a man’s ring is pretty, it looks good on me. I’m told it compliments my skin). It’s very important to me because of who made it for me and it’s meaning. My life time commitment to my wife.

When I feel I may damage or possibly have the ring slip off of my finger, I put it in a safe place. I love wearing it because of it’s symbolism. Plus I like saying “I’m taken.”

On our cross-country trip this summer, we stopped at a truck stop to gas up the car and use the bathroom. I went to the men’s room and did what I had to do. Of course you have to wash your hands, so I did. They was no hand dryer and the paper towels were empty, so I did what anyone would do, I waved my hands to dry them.

That was the wrong move. The soap and water loosed the ring on my finger and it went flying. It hit the floor and made a not so good sound. When I picked up the ring, I discovered that piece of the ring was missing. “Oh Sugar” cam out of my mouth. Actually, something worse came out of my mouth, but I’ll keep this PG-rated.

I immediately looked down to the floor to see if I could find a little piece of stone smaller than head on a nail. Amazingly I found it. When I picked it up, I discovered it was only half of the stone. “Fudge” was the next word out of my mouth. I started to think how I would explain to Kelly how I broke my wedding ring. So, I got down on the bathroom floor and started to look for the rest of the stone. I’m lucky no one walked in wondering why there was a man crawling on a dirty truck stop bathroom floor. It was like searching for a contact lenses. I wasn’t going to fail. After a few minutes of searching, I found the other piece. The back of the stone was the same color of as the floor.

I was able to put the two small pieces back into the band. I washed my hand again, but not with the ring on. I also used my shirt to dry my hands.

When I got back to the car, Kelly asked, “What took you so long, are you feeling ok?” That’s when I told her my story. She suggested I not wear the ring until we got it fixed.

A few days later we took the ring to the jewelry maker and retold my truck stop adventure. They were amazed that I found the stoned and got them back into the band. I was just happy they could fix it.

It’s amazing what you can do when motivated by fear! =0 )

Best Buddies Night at the Ballpark

When Kelly and I returned from our San Diego trip this summer, I was asked to join several members of the Best Buddies Arizona at the Arizona Diamond Backs game. We were there to help promote the organizations. I am a member of the Board of Directors. As a member of the board we work hard to be as visible as possible to help motivate members of the organization and the staff.

The exciting part of the night was being invited on to the field to be introduced on the jumbotron. The kids who got to go with us were really excited. I took lots of pictures and videoed some of the adventure too. They’re below.

The funny moment of the night came from Kelly. She had to sit in the stands while I was on the field. Being a great wife, she started taking pictures on her phone. The problem was, she was way out in the bleachers and I was at home plate. That’s about 400+ feet away. She took several pictures and text them to me. The text with the pictures read….”You’re the dot on the left! That’s how clear the picture was.

To repay my wife, I came up with a plan to show my love for her infront of thousands. Something she could see. A truly public display of my love. Before we were shown on the jumbotron, I found a piece of paper and wrote “ I Love KELLY!” on it. Every member of our group smiled and waved as they were shown on the screen. When the got to me, I pulled the paper out of my pocket and held it up in front of me. Everyone in the stadium saw it….except my wife. She was sitting under the screen and couldn’t see it! Great plants! Lol

Meeting Dad

Me, my step mother and my dad

My full name is Frank Cornelius Kitchen. I’m named after my father Frank S. Kitchen. I knew him when I was young, but due to divorce our time together grew limited as I grew older. The last time I saw him was when I was 18 years old.

We could point fingers and blame each other, but that’s a waste of time. A few years ago, I decided to locate him. I had several friends who were adopted or others who were considering adoption. There were searching out their birth parents. The others wanted to learn more about the parents of the child they would be adopting.

I was talking to my wife and we were discussing our family histories and wanting our future children to know their family lineage. What did I know about my dad? A little, but I needed to know more. Thanks to the internet, he wasn’t hard to find. I found an address and wrote a letter to it. About two weeks later, I got a letter back. It was my dad. We both agreed we had been apart way too long. The letter led to a phone call. The phone calls led to e-mails and texts. We’re still working on communicating more. It’s a work in progress to be honest.

The work paid off this summer. Kelly and I took a cross-country trip to see family and friends and on the way back we stopped to see him. I was scared and nervous and excited. Having my wife with me helped. I hadn’t seen my father in 20 years and now I was going to meet him and his wife (my-step mom). He would be meeting my wife for the first time too.

I’m not going to go into too much detail, but when I saw him, it was dad! I could tell it was him. I remember him being a big man. When I stood next to him, I was taller now. We talked, took pictures and caught up. Our time together was limited, but we promised to see each other more often and to talk more.

Life is short, if you have a relationship that hasn’t been the same for awhile, take the time to work at rebuilding it. It will take work, but it will be worth it and valuable for the future.

Hello Fall

September 21^st was the first day of fall! I was in Ohio speaking when the seasons changed. I was watching TV when the “news” was shared with the public. (It was important stuff according to the newscasters).

I immediately thought, where did the summer go? I guess that means I had a pretty adventurous summer. To be honest, this was a good summer. I got to spend a lot of time with my travel partner for life (my wife Kelly). We were so busy; I didn’t make time to blog. I looked at my photo file on my computer and thought, “I have a lot of pictures to post.” I looked at my journal and thought, “I have a lot I need to share on this blog.

So, get ready for a quick run down of my summer of 2011. There will be great pictures and a few funny moments. Most of all I’ll share some interesting information I hope inspires you to just go out and live life!

9/11 Memorial

Recently I was back in Ohio to visit my old college and former employer, Lakeland Community College. While I was working there, one of my students, Oloho Delano worked hard to put together a program to celebrate and remember the lives of people lost during the 9/11 tragedy. The program was amazing. I was honored to be a part of the program.

While I was walking into one of the buildings, I looked over to see the memorial Oloho was instrumental in having built. I couldn't believe 9/11 happened 10 years ago. Later in the day I checked my e-mail to see this video sent to my by Oloho. Watch, be inspired and be motivated to make an impact!

Words of Inspiration

Hello Everyone,

Long time no blog. I'll more than make up for lack of blogs this week. Be on the look out for LOTS of blogs!

Recently I asked a few friends if they could write a testimonial for me. I asked them to write about how I've assisted them with their speaking abilities.

My friend Oloho was the first to respond. The letter is amazing and true! Enjoy!

I remember when I first started college, I didn’t really know what to expect. When I was in high school, I believed that college was something for the really smart kids. For me, going to college to accomplish my dream of being a doctor seemed impossible, because I stuttered. I was raised to work hard, get a factory job, and pay bills, and ultimately that’s what I did. I got into a great company, making great money, with great benefits, but there was one thing wrong, I wasn’t happy. Deep down inside I knew that the factory life wasn’t for me. It was great work, but it didn’t utilize the skills that I believed I had somewhere inside me. I knew that I had to go to college, but how do you quit a great job? Where would I start? Could I do it? I didn’t know, but something drove me to figure it out. I told myself that if I was going to do it that I was going to give it my best effort, and whatever happens, happens, and I went for it.

One of the first people that I met was Frank Kitchen. Here’s this tall, slender guy who was always smiling and always positive. I was like, what’s wrong with this guy no one can be that happy all the time! But there was one thing that really drew me to him, his genuine love for people. And that gift that Frank has inspired me to perform my first speech ever in my entire life. Actually it was a speech that I wrote for him to speak, but he wouldn’t do it. He told me, “You wrote it, you have to do it,” and he just stood there smiling. And I’m thinking, “what an ass! I don’t do public speaking.” But deep down inside I really did want to do it, but I conditioned myself so well to fear speaking because of my stutter that I really believed that it was impossible. But Frank worked with me, coached me, and told me to go do it! Well, I did it, and then went on to do several more speeches, and today I coach and inspire high school students to be all they can be.

The Square

I recently got introduced to one of the best products ever! It's called the "square." It's a device you can attach to your IPhone or Android phone to receive/collect payments via a credit card or debit card.

It's a free app you can download to your phone and after you download the app. They mail you the "square" credit card reader for free! Pretty amazing.

I recently started selling my books and several times people told me they didn't have cash or there check book. That's when I told them I take credit and debit cards too. Most people thought I was joking. It's pretty simple, I swipe a person's card. I fill out a screen with the description of the item and the price. Another screen pops up where they sign their name. Then I can e-mail or text them a copy of their receipt. Everything gets stored in a file for your personal records.

Pretty cool. The company deducts 2.75% from the price as a service fee, but it's pennies for the convenience. At the end of the week, the money gets deposited into the bank account of your choice. Got to love it!

Hello Everyone,

It's been a very busy summer for me and Kelly. So busy, I failed to make time to post blogs. Be on the lookout for several video blogs, regular blogs and lots of pictures. We've been in 16 states this summer, logged over 6,000 miles of travel, survived one major accident, totaled one car, published one book, had tons of funny experiences, learned a lot and I got to see my dad for the first time in 20 years!

I've spent the last few months working hard on my book "Fresh from the Kitchen." Above is a rough draft of the book cover. I'm eagerly awaiting the first printing of the book.

The book contains over 40 unique chapters. They are a collection of my speeches, memorable blogs, articles I have written and fun stories. The book was written to educate, inspire and entertain. Each chapter can be read individually or together. Essentially you are reading a print version of my blog. Except their are new stories and a few tips and tricks on how to turn your dreams into reality.

Graduation

Last weekend I had the exciting opportunity to give the graduation speech for the Best Buddies Arizona Ambassadors Graduation.

I was asked at the last second. I needed to put together a speech that would inspire and motivate. The pressure was on. I wanted to do a great job because I knew all of the people graduating. I also wanted them to know that they had accomplished something special.

During the week I put a few ideas down on paper. The morning of the graduation I looked at what I had. I added a few words and moved a few paragraphs around to create my speech. I have a unique way of writing, but it works for me. I never write things in order. I just clear my mind of the thoughts and ideas I want to convey. Then I put them together in an order that makes sense.

The graduates and their parents enjoyed the speech. A lot of people said thank you, but one of the best compliments I valued most came from my wife. Kelly knew I had limited time to write the speech and barely had time to practice it. She told me, "I liked the speech, you are really good at writing." When you receive a compliment from someone who loves you, you get a fuzzy feeling inside.

Good Afternoon my name is Frank Kitchen

On behalf of the Best Buddies Arizona Board of Directors I would like to welcome the Best Buddies Ambassadors, their family and friends, and the Best Buddies staff. We thank you for attending today’s Graduation Ceremony.

I work at the Phoenix Zoo, I travel around the country as a motivational speaker, I am a husband and I am proud to say that I am a Best Buddies Speech Coach.

A few months ago I was asked by Dakota and his mother Gina to volunteer as his speech coach. I am so happy I said yes. Working with Dakota at the zoo is fun. But working with all of you at Best Buddies has been fun and life changing. My life has been full of incredible experiences. Working with all of you puts a smile on my face.

Today we are here to celebrate the amazing accomplishments of our New Best Buddies Ambassadors. These individuals have been participating in a program that provides personal and professional development skills.

I read a shirt in the Best Buddies office that says “Be Jealous.” That shirt is so right. I am so jealous of the skills you have learned while attending your training workshops. The workshops will not only make you great ambassadors, they are providing you with the needed skills to make you positive role models in the community.

I’ll admit I didn’t know much about Best Buddies when I was first asked to volunteer. I was told I would be working with people who have intellectual and developmental disabilities. All of you are so much more.

I used the dictionary to find the definition of the word Disability.

Disability - A physical or mental condition that limits a person’s movements, senses, or activities.

I know many of you, and you have displayed that you are not limited.

All of you have talents and special skills. These talents and special skills enable you to achieve your goals and dreams.

How many of you like movies? They are calling this the summer of Superheroes. I met a few superheroes this spring. The Best Buddies Ambassadors are my super heroes.

A hero is someone who is admired for their abilities, deeds and noble qualities.

Just like a superhero you have special abilities you can share with the world. Some of you know what your special abilities are; some of you are still learning them.

You have qualities that people admire. You are role models for the community. You always hear people focus on what superheroes can do not what they can’t.

No one says Superman can’t drive. Did you ever see him drive a car? He didn’t need to. He could fly.

Did you ever see Spiderman use an elevator? Nope. He just climbed the wall or used a web.

Batman didn’t have any super natural powers, but he uses his mind to build what he needed.

Ladies, you have Wonder Woman. She has brains and strength. You never see her waiting in line for a plane at the airport. She has an invisible plane she can fly. Do you think she complains about airline tickets?

You may not notice it, but you’ve done some amazing things. Raise your hand and say me too if you have these abilities.

Who has the ability to:

Play an instrument

Volunteer

Play a sport

Travel outside of Arizona

Be a good dancer

Sing

Have dreams

Have goals

Have a job

Go to school

Be a role model

You all have special abilities, and just like super heroes, you have snazzy costumes. Don’t you look good today?

Look how much everyone in the room has in common. The

World would be a better place if people spent more time focusing on what we have in common versus focusing on our differences.

I have worked with all of you over the last three months and I have learned how much I have in common with you. I have also learned that you have abilities that I am jealous of and would love to have.

Over the past few months, I watched Rachel and Adrienne provide you with the skills to be an ambassador. You’ve learned how to give a great first impression, network with others, develop a elevator speech, use props, set goals, and you were exposed to countless professional skills many people in the real world pays thousands of dollars to learn.

Along the way, your coaches were there to help you. The truth is, you helped us. You showed us hot to enjoy life. You passion is so inspiring.

You were all ambassadors before today. You showed everyone here what people can do when they are passionate about life. You showed us how to:

Create a game based on colors…the Color Game

Using technology

Text on phones

Use Facebook

Give great Hugs

Display huge Smiles

Teach us what is good music and bad music

Some of you graduated from High School

And other here are getting their Driver’s License

Some of you will be attending College

Other will be representing their community

And all of you have showed us how to be a Role Model

These are just a few of the things a good ambassador does. These are a few of the reasons I’ve accepted a position on the board of directors. You made an impact on my life and I want to assist you impact the lives of others in a positive way.

No one here is disabled. Everyone here has god given abilities and talents. Those talents need to shared with the world. That is why you are Best Buddies Ambassadors. It is your time to show the world what you can do! When you do that, the world will be a better place.

My buddy and friend Dakota always tells me, “It’s ok to have a disability.”

All of you are truth to that statement.

Sad news and inspiring news. A few days before the raise she fractured her pelvis. Most people would quit. Not Katie. Somehow she found a hand pedal bike and she's using her arms to power her way across the country! Amazing woman!

There's a snake in the car!

On Tuesday, I took our car to get the brakes changed. I was sitting in the waiting room working on my computer when I heard some of the employees talking. They were talking about a snake that got stuck in a guy's car. I'll admit that I was ease dropping, but who wouldn't.

I discovered the car was only a few feet away, so I went to investigate. I observed about eight people standing around a car. Some had camera phones, others had tools. The auto mechanics were literally taking a car apart. When I approached I was told to stay back. "There's a snake in the car, be careful." I told the group of employees I worked at the Phoenix Zoo and I would like to help.

At that instant one of the mechanics says, "We've got a zoo keeper here who can help us!" I far from a zoo keeper, but I have been trained to handle non-venomous snakes. As I got closer to the car, I talked to the owner. He told me his nine-year old son's snake got away from him while he was in the car. It slithered up into dashboard and wouldn't come out. It was a baby python and had been stuck inside the dashboard for about a day.

As we talked, the mechanics continued to take the inside of the car apart until they found the snake. Many were scared. I heard comments of: "will it bite me?" "I'm not getting bit by a snake." "I'm not getting near that thing." and "How did it get in there?"

The snake started to go behind the car stereo and make it's way towards the speedometer. That's when one of the mechanics got the radio pulled out and told me to get in there and get it. I reached inside the console and grabbed the snake just behind it's head. After that we untangled the snake from the cords and radio housing. I'll pulled the snake out and tons of photos were taken.

The owner thanked me, the mechanics and the dealership employees. Laughs were shared and looks of amazement were displayed. The snake was about 2 1/2 feet long. Nothing to big or dangerous. I was allowed to hold Isabella for a little bit as the car was put back together.

The owner left with the snake in it's pillow case. I waited for my car to arrive. When the car was ready, I got a nice surprise. I got a 10% discount. The reasoning? "Snake removal services"

Life is full of interesting adventures. I hope you enjoyed my adventure with a snake.

Push-Ups Complete

My 30 day 6,000 push-up challenge is complete. Call it Mission Completed. I did 6,060 push-ups in 30 days. I'm pretty proud of myself. I'm working on my next challenge. It's always good to push yourself to reach a goal. Especially when it involves taking care of yourself physically.

Several other people participated with me and set their own personal goals. Congratulations on pushing yourselves too.

If anyone has any ideas for me, please send them my way. I'm working on improving my health and adding on 20 "healthy" pounds by the end of the year. The push-up challenge added 3 lbs to my frame.

6,000 Push-ups

About two weeks ago, I found out that a co-worker had completed a challenge with his friends. The challenge was to do 1,000 push-ups in a month. They did it in 30 days. I thought it was a cool challenge.

On my way home I started texting my friend Brian about my co-workers challenge. That's when Brian text back saying that's only 33 day, I can do 200. I text back that was 6,000 in a month. Brian said that should be our challenge. I told him he was crazy and I could only do 3,000.

Later that night, I was walking with my wife Kelly and Brian text me again. "200 done" He started the challenge. I went home that night and did 200 too. Since that Friday night, I've been working to average 200, push-ups a day. After 15 days, I'm at 3,002 push-ups. Half-way done.

Brian told me early on that I could do any style of push-up, so I've done just about every type of push-up possible. I've put a link below to show different types you can do.

The challenge has been fun and good for my body too. Keep your fingers crossed for us. Next month we're going to figure out a challenge we can do that can raise money for charity. The challenge will be good for us and others. The challenges are a good push for both of us because of our internal drives to be challenged. I posted the challenge on my facebook page and several people are participating too.

Funny how a simple conversation can get things going.

Last week I got to see my sister. It was only for an hour, but the hour was great. I haven't seen her since October. She's serving in the military and my chances to see her are very limited.

She had a brief layover at the Phoenix Airport, so we got to have breakfast together.

The time was limited, but it was great to see my little sister. She'll be out of the country this summer protecting our country. I won't get to see her again until next year. Talking to her on the phone is nice, but seeing her in person is better.

The power of Motherhood.

May is the month that we reflect on and celebrate the power of motherhood. Mother’s are powerful. Let’s face it, her kisses can sooth any boo boo. Her “momma stare” can silence a crowd. Her stern voice can stop moving traffic for miles. Mother’s are simply B.A.D. Mother’s Believe in their family. They take Action when others might flinch. They are Determined to ensure the success of their children. Even in their “human” moment’s, Mother’s impact lives. In Frank’s new book “ Fresh from the Kitchen”, he share’s a story from his college graduation which shows how a simple moment of courage creates a lasting impression.

“…..I looked over my shoulder to see our commencement speaker, the late Congresswoman Harriet Tubbs Jones. My mother had seen her deliver a speech at the 2004 Democratic National Convention and was a huge fan. I told my mom to ask her for a photograph. She told me, “I’m too scared to ask. What if she says no?” My mother, the woman I knew as fearless was lacking the courage to approach someone she idolized. That’s when I told my mom, “It never hurts to ask. If you don’t do it, I will!” My mother told me, “No, I’ll do it!” She approached Congresswoman Jones and introduced herself. She told her how she admired her and would like a photograph with her. Congresswoman Jones happily obliged and invited all of us over for a group photo. At this point, more people in the room noticed that the Congresswoman was in the room and came over for the opportunity to take a photo with her. At that point, she and her assistant informed the gathering crowd that the Congresswoman had another engagement and she needed to leave. The last photo she took that day was with my mother. The courage to approach her and ask a question created a special moment we wouldn’t forget. Several people approached my mother and made the same comment, “I wish I had the courage to ask for a photograph!” That courage made my mom a leader. I was proud of her.

My mother didn’t realize it, but she was a leader. She was motivating herself towards her goal of talking to an idol and inspiring her children. Leaders are people of action. Leaders have a drive and passion that unites the people they lead. Throughout our young lives, my mother taught my brother, sister and I to work hard towards accomplishing our dreams. It is one thing to speak wisdom, but it is something completely different to demonstrate that wisdom. By approaching the Congresswoman, my mother motivated herself towards her dream of meeting her idol. At the same time, she inspired her children. She showed us that it takes action to accomplish a dream. Her fear did not prevent her from achieving her dream.”

Mothers play numerous roles from Courageous Leader to Wise counselor and everything in between. We know that Motherhood isn’t easy. The job is demanding, The pay isn’t great and the hours are long and tedious. However, we encourage you to keep on fighting the good fight of Motherhood. Whether you’re a birth mother, adopted mother, Den mother,“neighborhood” Mother, or soon -to- be- mother; you make the difference just by being you. B.A.D. to the core!!

Vounteering

Recently I was asked to be a volunteer for Best Buddies. Best Buddies is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to establishing a global volunteer movement that creates opportunities for one-to-one friendships, integrated employment and leadership development for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD).

I've been asked to be speech coach for a special young man who wants to be a motivational speaker. We are definitely learning from each other and have quickly become friends.

There are amazing people participating in various Best Buddies programs. One of the amazing people I've met would have to be Greg. He has a voice I would love to have and a memory I am jealous of. Take some time to watch this video of him speaking to a high school in Arizona. Amazing stuff.

Good Day

Some times we have good days and we just have to share it with people that we know. I work at the Phoenix Zoo. Some days I have not so good days and others are really good.

Today I was asked to be a Trail Guide. That means I get to ride a bike around the zoo give talks and presentations to zoo guests and visitors. Today was a huge field trip day. There were people all over the zoo. Plenty of opportunities for me to run my mouth.

Speaking is my passion, so anytime to run my mouth is a good day. It's even more fun when working with kids. The kids today had TONS of questions. Several of my talks involved me and the guests feeding animals. Several of my talks ended with applause and hand clapping. Talk about feeling good inside. Then there was the school group that asked to take a picture with me.

By the time the day was over, I had talk to groups about monkeys, elephants, giraffes, ostrich, vultures, snakes, otters, cheetahs, baboons, mandrills, warthogs, lions, orangutans, tortoises and where the closet bathroom is.

To top things off, a guest left a great comment about me and my customer service skills. The comment was sent out for all of the employees to see with all of the other comments left by guests. The comment is below:

The last thing we did on our day at your Zoo was stop at Stingray Bay. We paid our $2 each more to get in there then I saw the food for the stingrays was an additional charge. That one thing sent me over the edge. I’d paid ala carte all day and was still feeling sort of OK about it until the extra charge to feed the stingrays. Suddenly, I was mad. Then Frank in stingray bay spent a lot of time helping my child get up her courage to touch them. His fabulous attitude and customer orientation immediately turned me back into a happy camper. Frank is the reason I am leaving satisfied today.

This blog entry isn't me bragging. It's me typing about something I'm proud. Many of us don't take the time to share are good days with people. We just talk about what didn't go right in our days or lives. The next time you have a good day. Share it with the people close to you. Be proud of your accomplishments and you never know, you're good day my cheer someone else up.

More Acting

I've had the opportunity lately to dabble in acting again. Anytime I get a chance to act, funny stories follow. I always say "Live Life." Acting is definitely living life. Life is about relationships and experiences. Some funny and some a little painful.

My recent acting experience became an experience between me and the hard molded seat of a plastic horse.

Last Friday, I was asked to be an extra for a commercial. It was for Major League Baseball. I was playing the part of a person attending a carnival as 2010 American League Cy Young Award winning pitcher Felix Hernandez was being featured.

Felix is known for his pinpoint control. The commercial played up this fact by having him participate in the classic carnival game "Milk Jug Toss." You know the rigged carnival game where you throw a baseball at three milk jugs that are weighted. If you knock them all down, then you win a prize. Needless to say, he won all of the stuffed animals. It should be a pretty funny commercial when it comes out.

People think being in a commercial is pretty simple, quick and a lot of fun. Those thoughts would be right and wrong. I thought the shoot would only last a couple of hours, but it lasted almost 8 hours. Of the 8 hours, most of it was me and other actors sitting around and waiting. You have to wait for scenes to be shot; you have to wait for actors to arrive; you have to wait for the make-up, lighting and camera people to get everything right. There are also a lot of rules. Some of the biggest rules for this commercial were not to take pictures of Felix and his family and don't ask for autographs.

The commercial was shot in a local amusement park. The thought of hanging out in an amusement park sounds like a lot of fun. It can be if you get to ride the "good" rides. The memory of sitting on a carousel horse for almost one and half hours is still a little painful. I could still be dizzy from go around over and over again, or it could be listening to the same music over and over again. I believe me and the actors might have set a World Record for time spent going around on a carousel. People at the park had to think we were crazy. Every now and then, park guests were allowed to get on the ride, as we stayed on. The "Special 50!" The carousel people who never got off. It's a pretty funny image to be honest. Little kids got on the ride and got off. 50 adults get on and never get off.

The good news is, by the end of the night, one of the directors assistants did grab me to be in a scene behind Felix. I also made a few extra $$$$, which are needed to pay the bills. I had the opportunity to see a rough cut of the production and it looks really good. Nathan is a pretty amazing guy and director. Inside the Kitchen

I've decided to name all of my behind the scenes speaking adventures "Inside the Kitchen." I thought the name was fun and its says it all. You'll get to learn all the little "inside" details of what goes on behind the scenes and I look to my speaking career a full-time adventure!

My first entry for Inside the Kitchen deals with high hopes and dreams that can change in an instant.

As a speaker you're always excited to receive an e-mail or a call for a prospective speaking opportunity. When someone inquires about your services, you get really excited and you start to think about what you'll do and how you will get there. If you're being invited to a new place or somewhere unique or special, you're mind really gets going. As soon as the excitement comes, it can go away when you discover that the prospect doesn't have the budget, changed their mind or just doesn't call you back. Then it's back to square one as you look for new opportunities to fill your calendar again.

One summer in span of three e-mails I went from having two jobs at a college near my grandparents to no jobs at all. I went from having a contract worth several thousand dollars to having just the loose change in my pocket. Entertainment and speaking is a interesting world.

For every job that you get, you loose several more. This spring has been no different. I was contacted by three different groups about speaking in Dubai, the Bahamas and Las Vegas. You can imagine or the ideas going through my head. I thought of the world travel, a honeymoon for me and my wife and the opportunity to connect with new people. Before you knew things were over. The one group lost their budget, the next group changed their mind and went with someone else and the other postponed their event. Crazy.

So, the world travel is off for now, but several jobs did come in for the fall. Be on the look out for me in Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Virginia and Wisconsin. On top of all of that, I just got invited to do something more special. I was offered the opportunity to volunteer as speech coach for a young man with a learning disability. My opportunities this fall will be great, but giving back gives me goose bumps!

We live in a crazy world where things change second to second, but it's all part of the experience of pursuing your passion!

More behind the scenes

I'm sitting in Starbucks working and decided to type a new blog. I still haven't found a name for my new behind the scenes blogs. It's exciting to think about sharing the fun and not so fun details about what happens off stage.

Today is a crazy one because I have to work on my business and craft, but I also have to "work" so I can pay the bills.

This past December I made the decision to part ways with my long time and only speaking agent. My business partner/speaking partner/friend Rodger Campbell also made the same decision. We started 2011 with a fresh start, but also put EVERYTHING on our shoulders. No agent to make calls for us, or set up speaking dates.

We've spent the last couple of months laying out plans and reorganizing. We've learned a lot about what we can do, who we know and what we need to do. I put a great quote on my twitter page this morning, "We all have strengths and opportunities." The quote means, we have things in life we are really good at and opportunities to improve on all the things we are not good at; have limited knowledge or experience with or just don't know how to do.

Speaking is my passion and now its my business. This will be what I do to live my life and pay my bills. I had to take a step back in 2011 to take a HUGE step forward in the future. Part of the experience has been living the life of a struggling artist. When I don't speak, I don't make any money, which means I have to find ways to bring in income.

In between speaking opportunities, I'm working two part-time jobs. I work at the Phoenix Zoo and I work for Bed, Bath and Beyond. Yep, pretty glamorous for someone with the goal to be an International Speaker. I would love to do more, but this economy has led to many of us checking our ego at the door. I'll admit that neither job pays all the bills. Definitely in survival mode. It helps to have a loving wife to assist me with the pursuit of my and now "our" dream.

I have to work 60+ hours a week at both jobs and any spare time is spent working on speaking. That leads me to Starbucks. Today I made a call to Rodger while driving to work at the zoo. The call was to discuss our "Things to do" for the week. I also needed to check his calendar to set up a conference call with a possible business client later this week.

Once I got to the Zoo it was time to do my work, but on lunch break I was able to confirm two speaking dates for August and talk to a friend about performing some consulting work as a speech coach. Now I'm in Starbucks, typing this blog and typing up some of the brainstorming ideas I shared with Rodger this morning. I'm using this hour to work, because I could be stuck in rush hour traffic. I'm just making the most of my time.

I'm going to get going. It's time for me to jump in the car to go spend some quality time with my wife who has been very patient with my "business." After that, I'll get ready for a 6:30 AM meeting I have Tuesday morning with two friends who I'm pursuing a business partnership with. Then I'll be off to the zoo for another full day of work, before I return to Starbucks again tomorrow to avoid traffic.

What it takes to run a business

My beautiful wife is always giving me great ideas for speeches, marketing materials, finances, life and what to wear. Her latest "plan" was about my blog. She came up with the great idea of me sharing the details of what it takes to be a Professional Speaker.

Many of you only get to see what happens on stage for my shows and performances, but that is only a part of the story.

Prepare yourself for some funny stories and a lot of information on what it "really" takes to get a business off the ground.

I'm looking for a name for these entries, so if you have any ideas, please send them to me. Until the next behind the scenes post, I leave you with this.

I was up at 6:00 AM this morning to start my work. Today's list of things to do included the following:

- Manage my database of current and potential clients
- Made several phone calls to past clients to let them know I'll be in their areas this fall. I have a lot of long standing relationships and I like to hold dates on my calendar just for them. I like to treat anyone I work with like family.
- Paid a few bills
- I had a phone call with my insurance agent to discuss my business insurance
- Had a call with my "Bad Bad Apples" business partner to discuss future opportunities. We talk, text or skype daily
- I posted new blogs
- I'm about to call the accountant to discuss my companies taxes. Have to get everything taken care of by March 15th.

I did manage to have breakfast. Eggs, pancakes and chicken sausage with OJ and my daily vitamin.

I love speaking, but the one thing I've learned over the years is - Speaking is only a small part of being a speaker.

On Monday, I was given the opportunity to dust off my acting skills. Rusty is a better way to describe my skills. I was asked by my friend Nathan to play a role in his web series "Normally This Weird." I was asked to play the part of a special agent. Imagine the agents from the movie "Men in Black."

It's always fun to act, but I'll admit to being rusty and nervous. I have to thank Nathan and the other actors for not laughing when I started speaking my line before the words "action" were said. I learned a lot and I hope I get the opportunity to work with Nathan and his crew again.

For everyone reading this, I offer this piece of advice. If you want to improve your people skills and communication skills, TAKE AN ACTING CLASS. Acting classes give you a great opportunity to explore your emotions, body language and communicating abilities. You may think you're expressing one thing and discover people are reading you completely different. The acting classes and workshops I've participated with in the past really helped me with my soft skills. The classes were also a good way to relieve stress. After a long hard day, it's great to play the part of a jerk or villain and get all your anger out without upsetting someone.

What are you communicating?

I was driving home yesterday and saw this sign. It made me think...."What is this company communicating?" I didn't hide the phone number on the truck, maybe I should have.

The business wants people to buy vehicles from them. They also offer auto service. They have a big problem before the even work on your vehicle. Look at the sign. Would you trust this business if they don't take the time to spell check their signage?

The sign represents how we communicate. We may want to communicate one thing, but we may communicate another by our actions. The next time you have to communicate something really important, make sure your acting match your words.

Follow Your Passion

Tonight I was invited by a new friend to speak to a group of Marketing Students at Arizona State University. I was the Master of Ceremonies for a program on the Elements of Effective Speaking.
During the program I had endless energy. Why? Because speaking and entertaining people is a passion of mine.

As the end of the program, my friends and I were on "Cloud 9." The four of us have a passion for speaking and the ASU students allowed us to pursue our passion. We got a high that we don't want to go away.

Wouldn't it be great if life were like that? On my way home I talked to a friend. I discussed how it's great to do something you are truly passionate about. It's even better when people appreciate and acknowledge your passion. Thank you ASU for your time and the "fellowship" after wards at dinner.

Back to my life comment. Society is teaching us that we have to get a job and that's what life is about. Life is about living! Living is about doing what you are passionate about. The thing that keeps you awake at night. The thing that puts a smile on your face. The thing that makes you loose time because you work on it for hours without realizing it.

The people who have left a legacy on society and a mark on history are passionate people. We are not taught to pursue our passions. We must be adults and mature. Kids are some of the most passionate people alive. They are full of energy and passion. What happens to us as adults.

Working with the college students tonight, we talked about how fun it is to be on a campus because everyone is pursing a dream or a passion. Then they graduate and get into "the real world." We get hired to help someone else to accomplish their passions and dreams and forget about ours.

The best part about my passion is, I'm helping meeting accomplish their passion while I'm living mine. For everyone reading this. Pursue your dreams now or you'll spend your life wishing you did. Work to do something you are passionate about and it won't feel like work at all. You will have a constant high and a huge smile!

I recently received a great e-mail from a friend. I don't know if the story is true, but the message is a good one!

Two Choices

What would you do?....you make the choice. Don't look for a punch line, there isn't one. Read it anyway. My question is: Would you have made the same choice?

At a fundraising dinner for a school that serves children with learning disabilities, the father of one of the students delivered a speech that would never be forgotten by all who attended. After extolling the school and its

dedicated staff, he offered a question:

'When not interfered with by outside influences, everything nature does, is done with perfection..

Yet my son, Shay, cannot learn things as other children do. He cannot understand things as other children do.

Where is the natural order of things in my son?'

The audience was stilled by the query.

The father continued. 'I believe that when a child like Shay, who was mentally and physically disabled comes into the world, an opportunity to realize true human nature presents itself, and it comes in the way other people treat that child.'

Then he told the following story:

Shay and I had walked past a park where some boys Shay knew were playing baseball. Shay asked, 'Do you think they'll let me play?' I knew that most of the boys would not want someone like Shay on their team, but as a father I also understood that if my son were allowed to play, it would give him a much-needed sense of belonging and some confidence to be accepted by others in spite of his handicaps.

I approached one of the boys on the field and asked (not expecting much) if Shay could play. The boy looked around for guidance and said, 'We're losing by six runs and the game is in the eighth inning. I guess he can be on our team and we'll try to put him in to bat in the ninth inning.'

Shay struggled over to the team's bench and, with a broad smile, put on a team shirt. I watched with a small tear in my eye and warmth in my heart. The boys saw my joy at my son being accepted.

In the bottom of the eighth inning, Shay's team scored a few runs but was still behind by three.

In the top of the ninth inning, Shay put on a glove and played in the right field. Even though no hits came his way, he was obviously ecstatic just to be in the game and on the field, grinning from ear to ear as I waved to him from the stands.

In the bottom of the ninth inning, Shay's team scored again...

Now, with two outs and the bases loaded, the potential winning run was on base and Shay was scheduled to be next at bat.

At this juncture, do they let Shay bat and give away their chance to win the game?

Surprisingly, Shay was given the bat. Everyone knew that a hit was all but impossible because Shay didn't even know how to hold the bat properly, much less connect with the ball.

However, as Shay stepped up to the

plate, the pitcher, recognizing that the other team was putting winning aside for this moment in Shay's life, moved in a few steps to lob the ball in softly so Shay could at least make contact.

The first pitch came and Shay swung clumsily and missed.

The pitcher again took a few steps forward to toss the ball softly towards Shay.

As the pitch came in, Shay swung at the ball and hit a slow ground ball right back to the pitcher.

The game would now be over.

The pitcher picked up the soft grounder and could have easily thrown the ball to the first baseman.

Shay would have been out and that would have been the end of the game.

Instead, the pitcher threw the ball right over the first baseman's head, out of reach of all team mates.

Everyone from the stands and both teams started yelling, 'Shay, run to first!

Run to first!'

Never in his life had Shay ever run that far, but he made it to first base.

He scampered down the baseline, wide-eyed and startled.

Everyone yelled, 'Run to second, run to second!'

Catching his breath, Shay awkwardly ran towards second, gleaming and struggling to make it to the base.

B y the time Shay rounded towards second base, the right fielder had the ball . the smallest guy on their team who now had his first chance to be the hero for his team.

He could have thrown the ball to the second-baseman for the tag, but he understood the pitcher's intentions so he, too, intentionally threw the ball high and far over the third-baseman's head.

Shay ran toward third base deliriously as the runners ahead of him circled the bases toward home.

All were screaming, 'Shay, Shay, Shay, all the Way Shay'

Shay reached third base because the opposing shortstop ran to help him by turning him in the direction of third base, and shouted, 'Run to third!

Shay, run to third!'

As Shay rounded third, the boys from both teams, and the spectators, were on their feet screaming, 'Shay, run home! Run home!'

Shay ran to home, stepped on the plate, and was cheered as the hero who hit the grand slam and won the game for his team

'That day', said the father softly with tears now rolling down his face, 'the boys from both teams helped bring a piece of true love and humanity into this world'.

Shay didn't make it to another summer. He died that winter, having never forgotten being the hero and making me so happy, and coming home and seeing his Mother tearfully embrace her little hero of the day!

AND NOW A LITTLE FOOT NOTE TO THIS STORY:

We all send thousands of jokes through the e-mail without a second thought, but when it comes to sending messages about life choices, people hesitate.

The crude, vulgar, and often obscene pass freely through cyberspace, but public discussion about decency is too often suppressed in our schools and workplaces.

If you're thinking about forwarding this message, chances are that you're probably sorting out the people in your address book who aren't the 'appropriate' ones to receive this type of message Well, the person who sent you this believes that we all can make a difference.

We all have thousands of opportunities every single day to help realize the 'natural order of things.'

So many seemingly trivial interactions between two people present us with a choice:

Do we pass along a little spark of love and humanity or do we pass up those opportunities and leave the world a little bit colder in the process?

A wise man once said every society is judged by how it treats it's least fortunate amongst them.

You now have two choices:

1. Delete

2. Forward

I had the great opportunity to work with a group of Phoenix Area Entrepreneurs this past weekend. I was invited to be one of the keynote speakers at a Networking Luncheon. It's in an amazing feeling to share the company of people who are pursuing their dreams! It gives you new energy and just puts you in the right mind set.

Spending time with the right people is a major factor to achieving your dreams, but the most important factor is your mental attitude! The quote I shared with the group is a great quote for everyone to start the New Year with and every morning with.

What is your vision?

I was talking with a group of students last week and we talked about having a vision. We talked about having the best dream ever and then waking up. For most of us, we do what ever we can to get back into that dream as quickly as possible.

The funny thing is, when we wake up the next morning, we want to tell everyone about our dream, but we have a hard time remembering it! You know how you felt, but you try as hard as you can to remember what you saw and experienced. You want to experience it again! And again! And again!

Life is the same way.

I was looking at some of the quotes I write down from time to time and I read one from a friend/mentor of mine. His name is Delatorro McNeal. His quote is

"You pursue what you see!"

It's great quote, because it's so true. When you see something that you really want or need, you pursue it. We all have visions and dreams, but unless we write them down, have a visual reminder of that dream; we fail to accomplish it. "Out of site, out of mind!"

We all have visions and dreams we want to accomplish. Next time you have that great vision or dream, be sure to make a visual reminder that you will constantly see. The more you see it, the better chance you have for it to become reality. And just like that dream, be sure to share that dream or vision with the people you trust most. They can either push you or support you in your efforts.

I'm off to bed. I need to fill my head with great visions and dreams!

Last Friday I was invited to speak to the student leaders at Rio Hondo College in California. The Community College is located just outside of Los Angeles.

I have had the great opportunity to speak all over the United States and Australia. This was my first time speaking in the state of California! I had to double check to make sure that was right and it was.

I was invited to speak at the schools annual leadership conference. The conference is held to expose students to concepts and techniques to improve their leadership abilities. I was invited to give the opening keynote; facilitate several ice breakers and present two workshops. I had the opportunity to work with a speaker I became friends with this summer. His name is Mark Hartley. I learned a lot watching Mark present his workshops and present the closing keynote.

Tip of the day: No matter how good you think you are, you can always learn more. I took a lot of notes watching Mark. His website is below.

Friday was a fun time! The theme of the day became "attitude." Everyday we have the choice of bringing the right or wrong attitude to everything we do. Mark and I choose to have a lot of fun while sharing our knowledge with the students of Rio Hondo. That attitude was easy for the students to see. They chose to have the same attitude and day became a memorable experience for everyone involved! A fun experience!

On Saturday, October 16th I became a married man! I married my long time girlfriend Kelly! She is a very special person to me. I don't have enough time or space to say how special she is! We got married in beautiful Sedona, Arizona on a perfect day! Many of our friends and family say we have post card pictures to send to everyone.

We were surrounded by family and friends for a small intimate wedding that turned out just the way we wanted it. We had great time with family and friends and as many who attended agree; the food was Amazing!

Yeah, New Business Cards!

I just got off the phone doing my usual walk through before a program or show. This Friday, I'll be speaking to the students of Rio Hondo Community College in Los Angeles, California. To insure that I give the best performance possible, I call ahead of time to ask a few questions and answer a few questions. The call is a great form of customer service, but it also provides what both parties want.....to satisfy their needs and wants.

So, now I just have to put the final touches on my performance and I'll be ready to hit the road.

The Ladies of my life (My Wife and My Mom) on my wedding day!

I started this blog, so my mom could read it and keep track of what was going on in my life. Over the last five years, I've had other people start to read my blog and tell me how much they enjoy reading it.

After talking to my mom on the phone recently, she made a comment that inspired me to keep writing/blogging more.

It was a simple comment...."I read your blog the other day, I like what you posted!" That meant a lot. My mom is busy, but she still finds time to read the blog to see what I have to say and see what I'm up too.

Some of your are probably wondering how my work outs are going. Since the last time I typed, I started working out daily and walking with my wife.

Things were going really good, probably because I wanted to look really good for my wife on our wedding day. I was doing p90X workouts and things were going good. I took a before and after picture and showed it with my wife and workout partner. I saw great results, but no weight change.

Since the wedding two weeks ago, I haven't worked out, but I've been eating everything I can. The results? I'm up to 155lbs! I saw some of my wedding pictures and my wife and I are committing to taking better care of ourselves.

So I need to eat everything in sight and workout! I'm off to the local Recreation Center now to hit the weights. I'm also planning to starting some hiking and trail running with a friend of mine who is a police officer!

So, for everyone reading good luck with your workouts and I'll continue to keep you up to date on me!

Last weekend Kelly and I got married (more to come on that one).

Time to Exercise!

Last Night I went out running with Kelly. It was a 3 mile jog, but WOW! I've been slacking! Kelly ran a marathon in June and I ran 18 miles of it with her. A few months later, she asks me to join her for a short run, and it was tough three miles! My legs are a little sore today.

I'm really disappointed in myself. I'm pride myself on being in good shape. I jumped on the scale and another WOW! I'm 150 pounds! Not good when you are six foot two inches. There are people who have issues taking weight off, I have issues keeping it on. I've talked to doctors and trainers. I have to eat and work out.

My goal is to hit and stay at 170lbs. I've flirted with that number a few times, but not in a long time. I went to a healthy diet a few years back and it's amazing what happens when you eat junk food.

I told myself a few months ago that I would commit to doing the P90X program. It was working good for a few weeks, then I fell off the wagon. My good friend Brian started with me and we had the opportunity to work out together a couple of times. I noticed a real difference and I started putting weight on. Then I started saying "I'm busy" and here I am typing to you tonight.

The only way for me to become the healthy person I want to be is to put my info out there to the world. I'm hoping many of you will push me to get in better shape and hit my goals. Any time I post goals and dreams on this blog they come true. So blog readers, help me! I plan on posting weekly updates on what I'm doing to get into the shape I want to be in. I'm getting married in two weeks and we're talking about having kids. I'm going to be an older dad, but I want to be in great shape and health for my future kids. Kelly has the same dreams too.

The Wedding is Approaching Fast

Social Media and Traveling

Hello Everyone,

I just got back from a successful road trip. Got a chance to travel to Ohio, Pennsylvania and Minnesota. I had the great opportunity to perform for and educate the students and staff members at The Ohio State University Mansfield Campus, Albright College and Century College. Everything went great and I learned even more how much I enjoy working with people by sharing a little knowledge on stage.

I saw friends and family while I Ohio. My wedding is coming up in less than 3 weeks, so I spent time with my friends for a Bachelor BBQ. It was fun to relive old times and look forward to my new adventures with my wife to be Kelly.

In Minnesota I got a chance to meet my future in-laws and show off what I do by inviting them to one of my shows.

With all of this going on, I took the time to work a little on my upcoming book. I also spent a lot of time posting pictures and thoughts on Facebook and Twitter. I must admit I love those two forms of social media, but they're hurting my blogs.

Blogging takes a little more time and thought. Facebook and Twitter are instant. Over the last couple of months I've let everyone know to look me up on Twitter or friend me on Facebook.

My recent trips reminded me how I miss being around friends and family and sharing stories. I also got a chance to relive some of my blogs and realized how much I miss this too.

I don't think I'll ever be able to keep up the blogging pace I used to, but I'm going to work on providing one solid blog each week. I got to keep posting pictures too. Did I mention that I lost my camera on a trip to Washington D.C. this spring when a brawl broke out infront of me on the subway. Of course not, I haven't been blogging.

I'm crossing my fingers we get a new camera for a wedding gift (hint, hint), so I can start posting great pictures again.

Until then, keep reading and be on the look out for my first book by the end of this year! I think you'll like it, it will be similar to this blog!

I'm sure the subject heading of this blog got some of your attention! We all know how bad the Job Market is here in the United States. You have a lot of companies and scam artist taking advantage of people. You have a lot of "experts" giving advice about how to find work. You have others on TV in their Ivory Towers telling "us" what to do......"Just go get work at Starbucks or McDonalds." The sad truth is those opportunities aren't available for everyone.

My speaking in many ways has turned into a "hobby" because of the economy. A lot of places don't want to put in the time and money to teach and make their employees better. So, I too have been forced to look for a "job." With all of my experiences, work ethic, personality, education and skills even I can't find consistent work.

During this experience, I've been observing everything. I first started taking mental notes. Now I take physical notes. I'm using these notes for my next program/ One Man Show. It's called "Now Hiring....... Just Not You!" I've been interview a lot of people about their job hunts. It's amazing all of the contradictions in the process. Job Fairs that don't have jobs; company's accepting applications, but not hiring; employers who need employees right away but have a 8-12 week hiring process. The list goes on!

What happened to August? I spent 3 weeks on the road and forgot about my blog! I think I'll have to put up a note like many businesses in Europe that say "Closed for August!"

August is always my busiest point of the year. I work a lot of back to school programs and end up living in a lot of cars, hotels and airplanes.

This August was no different. I was in Georgia, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Wisconsin, Ohio and Illinois again. I got to work with lots of great people.

The most amazing part about speaking to/ teaching people is when someone smiles and says "Thank you!" or "You made an impact on my life." Those words put lots of goose bumps on your skin.

I'm still downloading pictures from August. From my speaking, visiting friends and wedding planing. The pictures require some good stories, so give me some time to catch up with the blog and post lots of great pictures and stories!

There are 60 seconds in a minute. There are 60 minutes in one hour. There are 24 hours in one day. Time… Because we are finite beings, our lives, our very existence is driven by time. Some of us never have enough time, and some have way too much time on their hands. Whatever the case, we are locked in this sphere of time. From the moment our eyes pop open, the clock starts and the seconds tick away. Each day that we are alive, we are confronted with a “magical” number of time. Every day, day after day, the same number…86,400. 86,400…what makes this “random” number so significant, you ask? It is the number of seconds that make up a 24 hr. day. There are 86,400 seconds in one day. You have 86,400 seconds at your disposal everyday! An interesting fact, but it does beg the question…what do we do with the time we are given? Do we use our time wisely? Are the most important things, most important issues, most important events, most important people given the greatest amount of our time? Or, do we squander our precious seconds?

Contrary to what most people think, we don’t have infinite amounts of time. In fact, our days are numbered. Knowing that, how we choose to live each second of each day should take on a different feel. Our lives should look different, be different. How we work should be different. What we say, the words we choose should be different. Why? Because, when time is no more, we are going to have to give an account of what we did with every single solitary second. Hmmm….

I was recently speaking at a leadership retreat and told my story about running in a marathon. Whenever I tell the story, people instantly connect with challenges me and my fellow runners went through.

After telling my story, one of the students listening came up to me and said thank you. She also told me how she connected with the story. She thought about the challenges she has gone through in her life, but she also reflected on a quote from a family member.

She wrote the quote down and gave it me. She told me the story behind it, and I instantly got goose bumps.

Why I do what I do!

A lot of people ask me why I speak and entertain people around the country. A lot of people ask how I deal with all the traveling and long hours in airports and cars.

When you do something you really enjoy, love and know you're supposed to do; all the craziness is worth it. There's just a point when it feels right!

I just got finished with three not stop days of training and speaking. Did so much, I have a very sore throat and no voice.

After spending about 20+ hours in a car driving through Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana and Ohio; I got a surprise in my e-mail box.

It was a letter from one of the students from Lewis University outside of Chicago.

Here is the letter

Hi Frank,

This is Tom. I sat to your left on Monday when we had asked you and Rodger to join us at our table for lunch. I am so happy that you came to our retreat at Lake Geneva this week!! This has honestly been one of the best experiences of my life and I was able to learn so much about myself and others throughout the entire process. I came into the week with an open mind and trying to do everything that I could to get the most out of this experience (even waking up at 4:45am on Tuesday to watch the sunrise on the lake haha). Keeping an open mind and embracing every opportunity to learn and engage myself in the activities made this week something that I will never forget!

I truly learned so much about what it means to be a BAD APPLE and how to bring forth my leadership abilities and develop an even greater self-confidence, motivation to succeed, and to continue to have a positive outlook in life. Thank you again for everything and keep doing what you are doing!!!

I love to travel, I love to meet new people but receiving letters like this really make my day and make we want to impact the lives of more people!

What is leadership? We know leadership isn’t easy! We know that leadership requires time and energy. We know that leadership requires both physical and fiscal investments. We know a lot about leadership, but we don’t know the exact definition of leadership. Author Joe Roest found at least 221 different definitions of leadership while writing his book “Leadership in the 21^st Century.”

Over $15 billion a year is spent teaching executives about leadership! That’s over 14.5 tons in twenty-dollar bills spent every year just to train the hierarchy of organizations. That doesn’t even cover students, employees and supervisors. We may not know what leadership is, but we know it’s important.

I believe LEADERSHIP is the ability to inspire, motivate or lead an individual or group to accomplish a goal or idea. We all want to be successful leaders and we want to work with successful leaders. The dilemma with Leadership is we focus so much on the goal or outcome, we forget about the little things!

Luck is when preparation meets opportunity. Being a successful leader requires luck. The ultimate lucky number is SEVEN. Here are Seven Little Things you can do to become a highly effective leader.

#1 Show Genuine Interest

Study the people you lead. Know their strengths and their opportunities for growth; know their likes and dislikes, know their motivations. Don’t treat the people you lead like a number! Know them as an individual.

#2 Be Visible!

Be a Role Model. Set the example. Show up to meetings and programs you ask others to attend. Let people see you working. Display the behaviors you want people to exhibit.

#3 Be a Teacher!

Provide people with a vision and teach people how to make that vision come true. Invest the time and resources to train people thoroughly and constantly. Develop a training program that helps people grow.

#4 Delegate

You can’t do everything yourself! Discover the talents of the people you lead. Use their talents to accomplish the goal or vision. Put people in positions to excel and grow.

#5 Do the Sugar Honey Ice Tea Jobs!

Don’t delegate only dirty jobs. Show everyone that you are willing to get dirty too. When people see you doing the tough jobs, you will earn their respect.

#6 Be Honest

Truthfully explain why decisions are made. A lack of integrity and communication can lead to rumors, uncertainty and distrust. Be fair and keep things professional versus personal.

#7 Reward People!

All Feedback must be given at the proper time. This is especially true for positive feedback or rewards. Some people require a simple, “Thank You!” Other people require more. Find ways to celebrate every accomplishment or item of growth. If you truly know (Rule #1) the people you lead; finding unique ways to reward them won’t be a problem!

“Trick or Treat?” This is the question children ask countless homeowners nationwide for Halloween. Their question is answered when they receive a “fun sized” treat. Many are ecstatic to receive a sugar filled confection that causes nightmares for dentists. Others say, “What is fun about this?” They’ve put in an enormous amount of time planning for Halloween. Children have to pick the best costume or several; they have to map out all of the good houses to go to; they have to recruit friends and family to participate; and they have to obtain the perfect device to transport their expected treats. All of this work seems under appreciated when a 1 by 1 inch piece of candy is dropped into a king size pillowcase. The homeowner has failed to reward the children of time and effort they committed to impressing them. The child has been tricked! The AWESOME house on the corner has not delivered on the expectations it created!

A multitude of businesses are treating their employees just like the children mentioned. They forget that their success is based on time and effort of its employees. There is an old saying that goes, “ the business of business is people”. If a business truly wants to be successful, it needs to concentrate on the people it employees. They must exceed their expectations. A satisfied group of employees leads to a successful business. To have the business of your dreams you must ask yourself this question, “Am I a Trick or a Treat?”

Here are four simple steps to increase the odds of you having the business of your dreams! I would like to introduce you to the 4 R’s.

#1 RECRUIT

You must attract the right people to support your cause or business. Just like Halloween you must be creative in the way you attract people to you. Research what others are doing, and do something to make you stand out from the crowd.

#2 RECOGNIZE

Once you attract people to you, you must recognize what you have when you answer the door? You have pirates, clowns and super heroes? You may even notice the occasional teenager or parent! Everyone person you hire brings both known and unknown talents to the table. The key is to recognize the skills they posses and how to use those skills to grow your business.

#3 RETAIN

When you move the letters around in the word RETAIN you get the phrase “TRAIN E.” A big factor to retaining employees is proper training. When children arrive to your door for Halloween you do two things: You organize them to receive candy one at a time, you teach them how to ask the question “Trick or Treat?” Constant training, organization and clear communication will foster an environment where people feel valued and have an opportunity to advance.

#4 REWARD

For employees, a paycheck is expected. When you do the unexpected you create loyalty. People will spread the word about you. Be the house that gives out the unexpected for Halloween. This will create a buzz in the neighborhood. A full size candy bar, a toy, crazy decorations or an out of this world experience are the ultimate recruiting tool. There are many ways to reward your employees. The first three R’s will help you learn if your employees are internally or externally motivated. Once you learn what motivates them, do the unexpected. If you want the more out of your employees, you must give more too! Make your business a Treat to work for and not a Trick!

Wedding Invitation

Kelly and I have been super busy lately doing our wedding planning! This is our day, so we're doing everything to have our personalities show.

The biggest part was our invitations. We had an amazing graphic artist make something original for us. I was excited to see the final result.
